Tracking Product Cost (COGS)
Cost of Goods Sold, Per Variant
Every product variant has a Cost field for recording your cost of goods sold (COGS) — what you paid to acquire or produce the item. Cost is separate from Price and Compare-at Price and is never shown to customers on the storefront.
Entering Cost Manually
Open a product, and in the variants grid enter a Cost value alongside Price, SKU, and Barcode for each variant. For single-variant products, Cost appears directly in the Pricing section of the product form.
Filling Cost Automatically from an Integration
If your store is connected to an external ERP or inventory-management system through a catalog integration, Cost can be populated automatically as part of your regular catalog sync. Your integration's price lists are mapped to Cartly's Price, Compare-at price, and Cost fields, so cost data stays current without manual entry. See Connecting an External ERP or Inventory System for setup details.
Why Track Cost
Recording cost per variant is the foundation for margin and profit reporting — knowing how much you actually earn on each sale after accounting for what the item cost you, as distinct from just the revenue shown by the selling price.
Important Notice
Cost reflects the variant's current value at any given time. If you update a variant's cost, the new value applies going forward — keep this in mind when reviewing cost-based reports that span a period where your costs changed.
